Toronto > Recreation
Overview
Like
most cities situated in northern climes, Toronto has two
seasons; hibernation
and patio. And just as soon as warm
spring sunshine melts the
snow from
the city streets, sometimes as early as March, those outdoor
patio chairs spring
up at every restaurant, pub and cafe with any outdoor space
they can call
their own. In fact, after a long, cold winter of scurrying
from building to building, hanging out at the many outdoor
venues is perhaps the city’s most popular
Spectactor Sport.
Other
than that, the city has a full range of....well, just about
everything. There
are four major league sports teams with
fanatical fans that
include hockey
(Toronto Maple Leafs), baseball (Toronto Blue Jays),
basketball (Toronto Raptors)
and football (Toronto Argonauts). As well, the city is one of
the ‘greenest’
urban centers you will ever see and boasts more parks with
city run swimming
pools and winter hockey rinks than any other in North America.
Actually
the best way to check this is zoom up to the top of the CN
Tower - you really
will be amazed at the greenery of Toronto.
And
throughout all this greenery the visitor will discover
hundreds of bike paths,
tennis courts, golf courses, picnic tables and beaches,
and plenty of ice
cream trucks. The main number for information on the city
parks, ranging from
the massive High Park where the Canadian Stage Company
performs Shakespeare
every night in the natural grassy amphitheatre to the kids
ridesand petting zoo at Centreville on the Toronto Islands,
can be found at the city’s
Parks & Recreation hotline number at (416) 392-8186.
