Toronto > Arts
Overview
With a base population of 2.3 million (although the actual
number is about 4.4 million which includes the Greater Toronto
Area), Toronto is the home to Canada’s major arts
organizations. Aside from big-name companies and organizations
such as The Canadian Opera Company, National Ballet, and the
Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Toronto is home to many huge
theaters (such as the 2,200 seat Princess of Wales Theatre), as
well as hundreds of stage, dance, and music companies.
Art galleries abound, from the huge
labyrinth of the AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario)
to small one-room funky little venues such as A Space Gallery, which
rents out display space so "the next big thing" can
introduce the world to his or
her contemporary masterpieces. Commercial galleries such as Odon
Wagner and Gallery One are strictly
credit card shopping in trendy Yorkville, while
the industrial building known as 80 Spadina provides rental work
and show space for amateurs
and professionals alike.
Dance companies provide a full range of venues and
productions suitable for all tastes. From the National Ballet to
Robert Desroisiers Dance Company to the Arabian style of the
Arabesque Academy to the African-Caribbean rhythms of Ballet
Creole to the innovative cutting edge of Dancemakers to
Esmerelda’s sultry Spanish Flamenco.
